Description

The Red Ball Express, a black unit under General George S. Patton, fights a valiant effort in the Normandy invasion and the drive toward defeating Nazi Germany. But black fighting men remain segregated in the armed forces despite the Allies' deserate need for a cohesive army. This critical program examines the lives of black servicemen and the racially divided America that they defended. "Jubilee," a radio show for black servicemen overseas, is contrasted with popular portrayals of blacks in demeaning roles including comic skits featuring Amos and Andy and Rochester, and songs like "Pardon me, Boy! Is that the Chattanooga Choo-Choo?" White Americans continue to ignore the needs of black Americans despite the emergence of black champions like boxer Joe Louis and outstanding performances by the great Paul Robeson. Many Americans express a shocked surprise at the costly race riots that rock Detroit and Harlem.

Note: This is part 7 of a series of 10 parts.
